DIN mean Director Identification Number. It is 8 digit unique identification number. Sec 153 & 154 of Companies Act, 2013 deals with allotment of DIN.Section 153 gives clarity on Application for allotment of Director Identification Number. Every individual intending to be appointed as director shall make an application in form DIR-3 by making payment of Rs 500/- Section 154 states that Central Government shall on receipt of application u/s 153 shall within one month allot DIN.
No, director cannot have multiple DIN. Every Director can have only one DIN throughout his lifetime. DIN can either be surrendered by director or ROC can De-Activate or cease DIN if opted through fraudulent practice.
Section 155 deals with prohibition to obtain more than one director identification number. Duplication of DIN means when director holds more than one DIN. Initially while applying for DIN there was no Passport or PAN verification, so there was maximum probability for Duplication of DIN. Now, DIN is tied to PAN or Passport number of the applicant and each person is allowed to obtain one DIN as per rules and regulations. Surrender of DIN becomes very vital for directors holding th in rare cases duplication of DIN is found.
In following case where director have more than One DIN ( Multiple DIN ) shall apply for Surrender of DIN.
It is possible to check online if a person has more than one DIN / Multiple DIN. Simply follow the steps-
If while checking it is found that any director holds more than one DIN, immediate steps needs to be taken for surrender of DIN. Preferably the DIN which is not in use shall be surrendered.
Section 153, Rule 11 (f) gives road map for procedure for surrender of multiple DIN or more then one DIN. If it is found that any director is holding more than one DIN due to any reason, application for surrender of DIN shall be made to ROC. Rule 11(f) sec 153 deals with surrender of DIN procedure. Application for surrender of DIN shall be made in form DIR-5.

Apply for Form DIR-5, upload it online and pay Rs 1,000/- as fees for form DIR-5

Upload Documents as under:
1. Proof of Identity of applicant like Voters Identity Card/ Passport/ Driving License/ Aadhaar Card/ PAN Card. 2. Passport size recent Photo 3. Proof of residence of applicant like passport, election (voter identity) card, and ration card, driving license, electricity bill, telephone bill or aadhaar shall be attached and should be in the name of applicant only not older than two months. |
